Support Local Businesses

Connecticut shut its doors over eight months ago in an attempt to curb the spread of Covid-19 and small businesses are struggling.

Most businesses were able to reopen within a month or two, and others followed a month or two after that, but none have been able to get back to business as usual. Businesses that depend on scheduled in-person interactions like gyms, salons, after school programs, and classes of all kinds have had their income slashed and are struggling to limp by on a fraction of the income they rely on. This summer as things seemed to be getting back to normal (well a new normal with more outdoor activities and mask wearing) you may have forgotten that even with this increase in interaction businesses that rely on close proximity and large gatherings could not open to full capacity.

The situation the world has found itself in for most of 2020 and we can predict most of 2021 as well is hard on everyone.

It just stinks.

However, it does no good to dwell on how much we hate our current predicament! Let's instead focus on things we can do to ensure that the businesses we loved pre-pandemic will be there post-pandemic.

  1. Take advantage of new goods and services are newly offered during the pandemic, like online ordering, curbside pickup, and online classes.
  2. Seek out opportunities to solicit local businesses during the pandemic. Now is a great time to do something that will bring you joy! Take an online music or art class, or buy some supplies for that hobby you've been wanting to try out. Take charge of your health and take an online fitness class with a live instructor, something that might have been really expensive pre-pandemic, but is really affordable now!
  3. Buy gift certificates this holiday season for everyone on your list at every small business you can! Gift certificates can be used for the aforementioned new goods and services that have been created since the March shutdown.
  4. Help promote your favorite business every chance you get. You may not have money to spend on non-essential items and activities right now, but you still can lend a hand on social media and by word of mouth. Never underestimate the power of your endorsement.

While you're out (or more likely at your computer) holiday shopping this year work even harder to support your local businesses and local community. We're all in this together and together we'll make it to the other side.
